Matthias's interest in string instruments started at an early age. He comes from a musical family and at age four he began studying violin, piano, and later studied viola.

Matthias spent two years working with Master Violinmaker Ernst Fuchs in Ravensburg, Germany. He apprenticed with Albrecht Loebner, Master Violinmaker at Koch-Loebner Gmbh and studied with bowmaker Carsten Loeschmann.

Matthias Lehner opened Lehner Violins in the spring of 2007. Lehner Violins serves well-known musicians in New York City as well as a national and international clientele. Matthias is known for his swift and reliable bow rehairs; tonal adjustments of violins, violas, and cellos; and his expert restoration of fine stringed instruments.

Prior to opening Lehner Violins, Matthias was a member of the staff of David Segal Violins where he managed the workshop for five years. Matthias also spent five years in the workshop at Christophe Landon where he restored fine instruments and deftly rehaired bows. In 1994 Mosa Havivi brought Matthias to New York City and employed him as a restorer and bow rehairer at Mosa Havivi Violins in the Carnegie Hall Studios.
